ADHD Therapist in Brookfield, WI
You're smart, capable and creative, and you're also always behind. You start ten things and finish two. You've tried every planner and productivity app, and none of them stuck. You walk into rooms and forget why. People see your results, but they don't see how much effort it takes to keep up, or how exhausted you are by the end of the day.
I'm Katie Nickel, an ADHD therapist in Brookfield, WI. I help adults build systems that work with their brains instead of against them, in person or online anywhere in Wisconsin.
Signs of ADHD in adults
Adult ADHD often looks different than it does in kids, especially in high achievers who've learned to compensate. You might notice:
Time blindness: underestimating how long things take, or running late despite trying hard
Starting easily but struggling to finish
Emails and messages left unanswered for days
Hyperfocus on some things and paralysis on others
Losing track of what you walked in a room for
Feeling scattered, overstimulated or mentally depleted
A long history of being told you're "not living up to your potential"
When ADHD hides under burnout
Many adults with ADHD don't find out until they hit burnout. For years, you made it work by over-functioning, with late nights, last-minute adrenaline and sheer willpower. Eventually, that stops working. Burnout is what you feel. Untreated ADHD is often what's underneath. It can come with anxiety or depression too, and we look at the whole picture.
How ADHD therapy helps
ADHD therapy isn't about trying harder. Together we'll:
Understand how your brain handles attention, time, motivation and emotions
Build simple, realistic systems for the things that keep slipping
Work on getting started, following through and transitions
Quiet the shame that comes from years of feeling "behind"
Handle overwhelm and emotional reactivity with more steadiness
Plan for real life: work, parenting, relationships and household load
My approach is neurodivergent-informed and practical. You'll leave sessions with strategies to test, not a rigid system you're supposed to force yourself into.
Do I need an ADHD diagnosis?
No. Many of my clients work on executive function challenges without a formal diagnosis. I don't provide formal ADHD testing or prescribe medication. If testing or a medication evaluation would help, I can refer you to qualified providers and help you prepare for that conversation.
What to expect
It starts with a free 15-minute consult by phone or video. If we're a good fit, your first 50-minute session covers your history, what's hardest right now and your goals. Most clients meet weekly at first. Read more about what to expect.

ADHD therapy FAQ
Do you do ADHD testing?
No. I don't conduct formal ADHD or neuropsychological testing, but I can refer you to providers who do.
Can you prescribe ADHD medication?
No. I'm a counselor, not a prescriber. Therapy can work alongside medication, and I can refer you to a psychiatric provider.
I was never diagnosed as a kid. Could I still have ADHD?
It's possible. Many adults, especially women, aren't recognized until adulthood. We can explore your experience in therapy, and I can point you toward an evaluation if that would help.
Do you work with parents who have ADHD?
Yes. Many of my clients are juggling their own ADHD with work and family life. I work with adults only, so I don't see children or teens.
