Burnout Therapy in Brookfield, WI

You're the one everyone counts on. Your career looks impressive, your household runs, and from the outside you've got it handled. But you wake up already behind. Rest doesn't fix it anymore. Weekends and vacations barely make a dent, and you can't remember the last time you felt like yourself.

If that sounds familiar, you're not lazy and you're not failing. You're burned out, and you've probably been pushing through it for a long time. I'm Katie Nickel, a burnout therapist in Brookfield, WI. I work with high-achieving adults in person and online anywhere in Wisconsin.

Signs of burnout

Burnout tends to creep in slowly, so it's easy to explain away. Common signs include:

  • Exhaustion that sleep and time off don't touch

  • Feeling detached, numb or cynical about work you used to care about

  • A brain that won't shut off at night, then fog all day

  • Snapping at people you love, then feeling guilty about it

  • Starting tasks easily but struggling to finish them

  • Getting sick more often, or living with constant tension headaches

  • A quiet voice asking, "Is this it?"

Burnout isn't a diagnosis. It's a signal.

Burnout isn't a mental health diagnosis. It's a name for what you're experiencing. What we work on in therapy is what's underneath it. For many high achievers, that's anxiety that keeps them over-preparing and over-functioning, depression that's been hiding behind productivity, or ADHD that's been compensated for with sheer effort for years. When we treat the underlying cause, the burnout makes sense, and you can make real changes instead of just recovering long enough to burn out again.

How burnout therapy helps

Burnout therapy isn't about learning to cope with an unsustainable life. It's about understanding why you keep ending up here and changing the pattern. Together we'll:

  • Figure out what's driving the exhaustion, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, perfectionism or a nervous system stuck in overdrive

  • Calm your stress response with practical nervous-system regulation tools

  • Look at the beliefs that keep you saying yes when you mean no

  • Build boundaries and systems that fit how your brain actually works

  • Reconnect with the parts of your life that have been on hold

I draw on evidence-based approaches including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), solution-focused therapy and trauma-informed care. Sessions are practical. You'll leave with something to try, not just a chance to vent.

What to expect

It starts with a free 15-minute consult by phone or video, to see if we're a good fit. If we are, we'll schedule your first 50-minute session. That one is about your history, what's going on now and what you want to be different. From there, most clients meet weekly at first, then space sessions out as things steady. You're in control of the pace. Read more about what to expect.

Burnout therapy FAQ

Is burnout a real diagnosis?

No. Burnout describes a pattern of exhaustion, detachment and reduced effectiveness. It's not a diagnosis. In therapy, we look at what's underneath it, which is often anxiety, depression or ADHD.

Can I recover from burnout without quitting my job?

Many people do. Therapy helps you sort out what's within your control, what isn't, and what you want to do about each. Any big decisions stay yours.

How long does burnout therapy take?

It depends on what's underneath and what you want to change. Some clients work with me for a few months, others longer. We'll check in on your goals regularly.

Do you only work with women?

No. I work with adults 18 and older who live in Wisconsin. Many of my clients are high-achieving women, but anyone who relates to this page is welcome.
